Sorry Europe and N America, FASHION is more FUN in Asia now.
When it comes to new trends, Europeans and N Americans are more likely to just dip their toes into them, while maintaining the security of established looks. There is no longer the mass adoption of an emerging #trend that creates fun, drama and shock value, as we had back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’ such as #punk, #hippie, #grunge, #genderbender, etc. ‘Play it Safe’ seems to be the mantra today.
In contrast, Asia is having more fun with #fashion, at a mass level. Once known for their conformity, Asian youth today, in cities from Beijing to Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul is more experimental and more adventurous. There is no underlying political message in their #style, as Western youth had back in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s all about having fun. The sartorial range is wide, the styles bolder and colours more daring. Expressive is another operative word that’s relevant. And it’s not just clothes, the sense of style extends to cars and beyond.
Will the emerging #GenerationZ in Western countries become less risk averse in their styles choices? We will see. In the meantime, it’s worth remembering the old Chinese proverb: “A man grows most tired while standing still.”
